The age range listed with each character is the age the character should present on stage, not the age of the actor playing the role. 

*Special note: Though the characters in the piece are cis-gender, non-binary, trans, and gender non-conforming actors are encouraged to audition.

The Choreographer will be cast as a courtesan in the show.

All Characters will have some form of fight choreo in the chase sequence, but it is farce combat, not full combat.

All Characters will be involved in close body contact with each other. Specific Intimacy will be listed with each character:


Prologus/Pseudolus (male presenting) – Age range: 30-50
Prologus: Introduces the audience to the comedy they are about to see. (Same actor who portrays Pseudolus in Act 1 and Senex in Act 2).
Pseudolus: A Roman slave, owned by Hero, who seeks to win his freedom by helping his young master win the heart of Philia. Quick-witted, scheming, childlike spirit.

Senex (male presenting) – Age range: 45-70
An old man and father to Hero and husband to Domina.

Domina (female presenting) – Age Range: 40-50
Senex’s wife. A shrewish woman who dominates to the point of answering herself the questions she asks of others. Loves her husband deep down, but is outwardly controlling, demanding, and manipulative.

Hero (male presenting) – Age Range: 20-30
The young son of Senex and Domina. He falls in love with Philia and agrees to give Pseudolus his freedom if he can help Hero woo her. Practical, privileged, romantic. *Has some intimacy with Philia

Hysterium (male presenting) – Age Range: 40-55
The chief slave in the House of Senex. Believes he is in control, but is actually Pseudolus’ puppet to carry out his schemes. Anxious, conservative, loyal. He desperately wants everything to be in order. *Will be kissed on the forehead and cheeks. 

Erronius (male presenting) – Age Range: 45-70
An old man, searching for his lost children.

Miles Gloriosus (male presenting) – Age Range: 25-35
The archetype of the braggart soldier. A captain in the Roman army to whom Marcus Lycus has promised Philia. Commanding, boastful, manly and strong.

Lycus (male presenting) – Age Range: 40-50
The owner of the house of Courtesans. Always out to make a profit, but also wants to provide good on what his business offers.

Philia (female presenting) – Age Range: 18-26
A virgin in the House of Lycus whom we also find out is Erronius’ daughter. She is promised to Miles and vows to give him bodily what he has paid for, but loves Hero and promises he will always have her heart. Young, pretty, devoted. An archetypal ingénue. *Has some intimacy with Hero

Tintinabula (female presenting) – Any Age
One of Lycus’s courtesans, Tintinabula has “the face of an idol . . . the arms of a willow tree . . . and the pelvis of a camel.”

Panacea  (female presenting) – Any Age
Another of Lycus’s courtesans, Panacea has “a face that holds a thousand promises, and a body that stands behind each promise.”

The Geminae  (female presenting) – Any Age
Twin courtesans, the Geminae are, according to Lycus: “A matched pair. Either one a divinely assembled woman, together an infinite number of mathematical possibilities.”

Vibrata  (female presenting) – Any Age
Another of Lycus’s courtesans, Vibrata is “exotic as a desert bloom . . . wondrous as a flamingo . . . lithe as a tigress . . . for the man whose interest is wildlife.”

Gymnasia  (female presenting) – Any Age
Another of Lycus’s courtesans, Gymnasia is “a giant stage on which a thousand dramas can be played.”

The Proteans/Soldiers – Any Genders – Any Age
